Science Story features textiles made from the castor oil plant

Science Story is a new collection that challenges the status quo by championing cutting-edge textiles developed by brilliant thinkers, researchers and scientists. The collection is built around modern and experimental garments made with innovative new textiles. Science Story introduces Desserto, a plant-based leather made from organically grown cactus, and EVO by Fulgar, a bio-based yarn derived from castor oil, a renewable resource. Science Story is part of H&M’s Innovation Stories, a series of collections dedicated to promoting the use of new, more sustainable materials, technologies and production processes within the garment industry. “Our new concept continues H&M’s journey towards a sustainable and circular fashion system. Innovation Stories allows us to develop and grow, all while creating desirable and long-lasting pieces that we hope our customers will love and be proud of”, says Ann-Sofie Johansson, creative advisor at H&M. Desserto is a highly sustainable plant-based material made from cactus in Mexico. It is very soft to touch and can be used in a wide range of applications. The cactus itself is organically grown without additional irrigation, and it is a perennial plant, living about eight years. So there is no need to continual cultivate the land. Mature leaves are harvested and dried naturally, so no extra energy used. Any waste cactus is sold into Mexico’s food industry. Fulgar is an Italian company that has developed EVO, a yarn made from the castor oil plant. It is an ultra-light fibre which can be used for athletic wear, swimwear and underwear to name a few applications. The Science Story collection is available online at hm.com from 18 March and in selected US and Canadian stores from 1 April.
