Leon burgers are now carbon neutral
Carbon-neutral burgers and fries will help Leon reach its goal of becoming net zero by 2030
Leon Restaurants has measured the carbon footprint of its fast food heroes so that now the Crispy Chicken Parm burger, Vegan Sweet Carolina BBQ burger, LOVe burger, Fish Finger burger and Chargrilled Chicken burgers and the baked waffle fries are all carbon-neutral.
The LOVe burger in the new menu is from supplier, Meatless Farm and is made of pea protein, an ingredient that has a lower impact than soy alternatives. Leon changed its energy supplier and Ecotricity now supplies its restaurants with 100% green UK electricity, which also contributes to menu items having a lower carbon footprint.
The company has teamed with ClimatePartner who has measured the carbon footprint of each menu item according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard (GHG Protocol). The CO2 emissions have been considered all along the supply chain starting with the suppliers (for both packaging and burger ingredients) all the way to the restaurant kitchens and including the end-of-life phase.
For every burger and portion of fries sold, Leon will purchase carbon credits to offset its footprint. The company has chosen three projects, one that protects the Amazonian rainforest in Peru, one that removes carbon from the atmosphere via a bamboo planting project in Nicaragua, and a progressive UK woodland project.
Kirsty Saddler, values and sustainability director at LEON, said: “We are working to reduce our emissions and achieve a net zero target by 2030, offsetting unavoidable emissions, with reforestation and afforestation projects, is an important commitment for us as we work towards that long-term target.”
