Spotlight on saving water

It is Water Saving Week

It’s Water Saving Week championed by WaterWise, an NGO focused on reducing water consumption in the UK. This Water Saving Week the message is more urgent than ever before: we all need to be using less water. We tend to think of the UK as perpetually damp and soggy, but that’s just not the case anymore. Last spring was one of the driest ever recorded in the UK, and this April was one of the driest on record. Climate change is ushering in longer periods of dry weather and, combined with population growth and changes in lifestyle, has led to growing pressure being put on our water supplies. Pressure that just can’t be ignored. The Environment Agency estimates that if further action is not taken, between 2025 and 2050 the UK will need more than 3.4 billion additional litres of water per day to meet future demand for public water supply. Its National Framework for Water Resources sets out a target to reduce demand to an average of 110 litres per person per day by 2050. Waterwise’s managing director, Nicci Russell, said: “Water scarcity is a challenge right here, right now, right across the UK – we all have a part to play in making sure we don't waste water, so there's enough to go round people, the environment and wildlife. Can you imagine a world without water?” For this year’s Water Saving Week, WaterWise is focusing on water consumption outside of the home. WaterSafe – an online register for approved plumbers – is supporting Water Saving Week encouraging everyone to have conversations about saving water and how this can also save energy and money on metered bills – playing an important role in helping the UK reduce its carbon footprint. Julie Spinks, director of WaterSafe, said: “WaterSafe is proud to support Water Saving Week for the sixth year running as saving water is so important as we start to feel the effects of climate change. Having a conversation with an approved plumber is a great starting point for anyone responsible for water efficiency in their workplace or community. “Plumbers registered with WaterSafe are supported by their local water company – so it makes good business-sense to tap into their knowledge, especially when it comes to using water-saving fixtures and fittings.”
