The UK supermarket giant, Asda has been once again proving the power of pre-loved, this time at its George HQ where it held a special second-hand sale this week to raise money for victims of the Turkey Earthquake.
The clothing sale featured items donated exclusively by members of the Asda and George at Asda team who came together this week to raise funds in support of the families and individuals impacted by the Turkey-Syria earthquake that struck in February this year.
The cause is one particularly close to the Asda team’s heart who have rallied in support of the more than 60 colleagues based in Asda’s Turkish sourcing office.
The 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in southern Turkey, near the border of Syria, on 6th February and is recorded as the most devastating to hit the country in more than 20 years. It’s reported that the earthquakes and underlying vulnerabilities resulted in the deaths of at least 56,000 people in Turkey and Syria.
Coinciding with this year’s Earth Week activities, the George at Asda team decided to take a circular and planet-friendly approach to fundraising by proving the power of pre-loved and hosting its own second-hand clothing sale.
“Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do and that includes looking after the welfare of others: our colleagues, our supply chain, and all our stakeholders,” Jade Snart, senior sustainability manager at George and GM at George at Asda, told Products of Change.
“Bringing a pre-loved clothing sale into our headquarters has enabled us to not only keep clothing in circulation for longer but also raise vital funds for victims of the earthquake in Turkey, a cause that is very close to our hearts here at Asda as we stand in solidarity with our colleagues at our Turkish sourcing office.”
In recognition of the success of the event, Jade and the Asda team now plan to host a follow-up pre-loved sale at Asda House in May. Meanwhile, the pre-loved sale will continue to be held at the team’s George HQ.
The George at Asda team has been a leader in bringing pre-loved fashion shopping to the mainstream, having previously partnered with the second-hand clothing charity, Pre-Loved Kilo to host concession areas within its own George at Asda departments.
The team continues to drive forward the message of sustainability and pre-loved through in-store activations and wider sustainability strategies.
