The Red Way, Liverpool FC’s sustainability initiative, has recently received a total of three awards, showcasing the POC member’s commitment to bettering the future of the industry.
The first was from the European Club Association, which gave The Red Way the Award for Sustainable Governance. This recognised that the programme was successfully rooted into the values of the club.
At the Sport Positive Awards 2024, The Red Way received the Education and Training award, similarly celebrating how sustainability is perpetuated throughout the club and its operations.
Finally, The Red Way was awarded the Sustainable Packaging Award at the National Sustainability Awards 2024. This is as a result of the club removing single-use plastics and reducing the carbon emissions of its packaging.
Rishi Jain, director of impact at LFC, commented, “Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do as a club and by embedding it into our operations, we are actively shaping a better future for our communities, the planet, and the sport of football.
“This hat-trick of awards not only celebrates our progress but also underscores our commitment to inspiring others as we remain the leading sustainability programme within world football.”
The Red Way was launched in January 2021 as a benchmark of how to measure progress and push it further. The initiative uses an external verification system, ISO20121, to hold itself accountable and commit to continuous improvement. It is the only major European football club to hold this certification.
Some of The Red Way’s most recent achievements include:
- 94% of the club’s operations run on clean energy
- The LFC Foundation supported 123,000 people between 2022 and 2023
- Executing cross-club and athlete-focused sustainability training programmes that cover ethics, equality, diversity, inclusion, environmental sustainability and community engagement
- 98% reusable cup rate from fans
- 74% of own-brand packaging sustainably sourced
- Significant strides made towards its 2030 net-zero goal.
