Products of Change members can now catch the latest Toy Workstream online session – an exploration of sustainability in plastics hosted by LEGO’s Sine Møller – via the Products of Change On Demand platform.
POC’s Ambassador for Toys and LEGO’s Sustainability Transformation Director, Sine sparked a lively debate among the toy workstream earlier this week when she took the opportunity to share the latest research and development the LEGO Group has broached when it comes to the plastics it is using across its brick ranges.
Last month, the LEGO Group made headlines once again, this time for a new partnership between European Energy and Novo Nordisk to deliver e-methanol as a lower-carbon alternative to conventional plastic production.
Under the new agreement, European Energy will produce methanol from renewable energy and biogenic CO2 which will in turn be used for plastic production.
In her discussion – attended by Products of Change members from across the community, including toy brands, publishing companies, and retailers – Sine detailed how the LEGO Group will begin exploring the potential of using this e-methanol to make selected elements in its portfolio with prototypes expected to land in the coming years.
Sine went on to take meeting attendees on a journey through LEGO’s relationship with plastic and its stages of evolution, from the 1950s through to modern day in which an increasing number of LEGO’s brick elements are turning to bio-based polymers for their production.
Conversation covered the use of rPET in toys with a call out for improved recycling infrastructure to help make the strides in sustainability needed, as well as an exploration of the topic of true circularity in the toy resale market.
Products of Change members can now catch the session at the On Demand platform. Non members interested in learning more are encouraged to do so by contacting Rob at Rob@productsofchange.com or Helena at Helena@productsofchange.com
