In this recent webinar, Paul Earnshaw unpacked the latest developments in EPR in the UK, highlighting how increasing alignment between EPR frameworks and upcoming waste legislation will influence packaging strategies in the years ahead.
Paul Earnshaw, lead packaging manager at Tesco, discussed Tesco’s packaging strategy and UK packaging EPR legislation. Tesco’s strategy focuses on minimising packaging impact, using recyclable materials, and ensuring sustainability.
Key points included the Packaging Recycling Note (PRN) tax, which Tesco pays per ton on packaging materials, and the Plastic Packaging Tax, introduced in 2022, taxing single-use plastic without 30% recycled content.
EPR, starting January 2023, requires producers to pay for packaging collection and processing. Tesco must report 177 billion packaging components annually. Paul emphasised the importance of accurate packaging data for compliance and cost management.
