With evidence now stacking up that the release of fibre fragments – known as microfibre pollution – into the natural environment are worsening the planet’s biodiversity loss, environmental pollution, and climate change crisis, Products of Change members have been invited to learn just what the apparel industry can do to tackle the problem.
As part of its mission to advance critical research and science based actions to help industry eliminate microfibre pollution, The Microfibre Consortium will be hosting a special public webinar later this month, when it will offer “An Introduction to Fibre Fragmentation and The Triple Planetary Impact”.
The triple planetary crisis refers to the three main interlinked issues that humanity currently faces: climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. Each of these issues has its own causes and effects and each issue needs to be resolved if we are to have a viable future on this planet.
On June 25, The Microfibre Consortium will deliver a one-hour public webinar to explore the growing base of scientific evidence connecting these three planetary crises with the problem of fibre fragmentation and help attendees and industry better understand why it is a crucial issue to tackle.
‘An Introduction to Fibre Fragmentation & The Triple Planetary Impact’ is scheduled for Tuesday 25th June 2024.

In 2021, The Microfibre Consortium launched its Microfibre and Roadmap to bring together collective data, research, and collaboration to deliver industry-specific tools to be used throughout the apparel industry value chain.
The organisation, therefore, wants to align the global textile sector and its related stakeholders on the need for action on fibre fragmentation while collaborating to influence regulatory policy; harmonise and amplify effort across the industry, and build a collective understanding across a community of stakeholders through scientific research which underpins the development of an authoritative guidance for the apparel sector.
In October last year, The Microfibre Consortium joined forces with the ZDHC Roadmap to Zero Programme to release a snapshot guidance to help tackle microfibre loss in the textile industry. The guidance is aimed at empowering supply chains, brands, and retailers to take effective measures against microfibre pollution.
Dr Kelly Sheridan, research director of The Microfibre Consortium, said: “Mitigating microfibre pollution will only be possible through concerted collective action, using a portfolio of approaches. The actions we have outlined can be adopted by the supply chain today, which will have an immediate impact on protecting our environment and taking responsibility as an industry.”
The full guidance can be found on The Microfibre Consortium website.
