The Hyve Group – the team behind the bi-annual retail buying shows, Spring and Autumn Fair – is going Carbon Literate, having undertaken a full learning course with the Manchester-based global educational platform, the Carbon Literacy Trust.
As part of the group’s own journey with sustainable development, Hyve has taken steps to actively increase its wider understanding of carbon – from how to measure and track emissions to the actions that can be taken to then reduce them.
Having undertaken training with the Carbon Literacy Trust, Hyve’s senior marketing manager Lucy Green was tasked with delivering a comprehensive course on Carbon Literacy to internal members of the Hyve team. These members will now submit their own projects to become certified ‘carbon literate’ while the team begins to look at changes that can be made across the Hyve Group to start reducing its environmental impact.
“Working in events with the majority of our emissions sitting in scope three, it can feel overwhelming on where to start,” said Lucy Green, posting the learning event on social media this week.
“’Progress over perfection’ was the consistent topic of conversation throughout and we had some deep discussions around what we can do personally and as a business to make a difference.”
The Carbon Literacy Trust is a knowledge sharing platform that acts to deliver for companies and individuals a comprehensive understanding of the climate crisis, the issue around carbon emissions, and the actions that can be taken to start reducing impact. The team has built a learning framework that can then be transposed onto its clients’ business models and operational structures, meaning team members can deliver the same education to other members of staff in ways that best suit the business.
“Success rests on reaching the companies outside of the ‘sustainability bubble’,” said Phil Korbel, co-founder and director for advocacy at the Carbon Literacy Trust. “That’s how we’re going to make a difference, by engaging the less usual suspects in this conversation, providing them the tools to go on and teach their people about carbon.”
Phil and his team’s work to engage outside industries and companies with climate education will be the basis of his speaker session at the Sustainability in Licensing Conference next month. The event will be held at the Royal Geographical Society in London, where Phil will broach the topic of true sustainability in licensing and the steps we must take to get there.
Meanwhile, Hyve Group will now continue to develop strategies based on the learnings from the course.
“It’s crucial that we all understand the impact of our actions on the environment,” said Lucy. “I’m thrilled to have been able to contribute to our team’s knowledge in this area.”
