Kids’ series Pop Paper City earns milestone sustainability award

The children’s animated series, Pop Paper City has reached a significant milestone having been awarded a 94% sustainability score and three stars from the animation industry’s Albert Certification body.

The milestone follows what the team behind the creation has billed as ‘comprehensive’ training and education around carbon emissions via Albert and the Carbon Literacy Project ensuring production methods aligned with environmental objectives.

Produced by the British independent studio Lovelove Films, Pop Paper City was picked up for global distribution by Aardman back in 2022 and has since scored a slew of broadcast partners including Channel 5’s Milkshake here in the UK.

Set in Pop Paper City, the series follows the adventures of an animated group of paper friends who – with the aid of Helping Hand – routinely craft new tools to be used on their exploits. The series itself acts as a gateway to creativity and imagination for children while emphasising the sustainable principles within each storyline.

These principles include reducing, reusing, and recycling while the series aims to inspire children to become more aware of eco activities from a younger age while highlighting the benefit of things like renewable energy and eco-friendly transport.

Lovelove Films becomes Carbon Literate

Earlier this year, senior studio team members underwent a training programme with the Carbon Literacy Project, a team first introduced to the brand licensing community at the Sustainability in Licensing Conference late last year.

Now, green memos are circulated to the teams and partners promoting the adoption of and adherence to sustainable practices throughout the animation production process. The studio also upcycles the paper offcuts for future crafting tasks and transports its production talent via eco-friendly and electric vehicles.

The studio also recently switched its energy provider to Octopus to ensure it operated only on renewable energy.

Lovelove Films continues to mitigate its environmental impact by investing in habitat restoration and wildlife conservation projects. Meanwhile, recognising the critical role of biodiversity in combating climate change, the series supports initiatives aimed at restoring various habitats, including wildflower meadows and woodlands.

Further to this, Pop Paper City offsets its environmental impact through tree-planting initiatives, contributing to the preservation of wildlife habitats and the overall wellbeing of communities in the UK.
