The Australian toy brand Moose Toys has partnered with both Circonomy and the retail property group Vicinity Centres to bring a new toy rehoming and recycling scheme to a popular Melbourne shopping centre.
The latest iteration of Moose Toys’ More Joy, Less Waste activation, the scheme will enable local Melbourne residents to dispose of pre-loved or unwanted children’s toys in a sustainable and responsible way.
Once collected, Circonomy will sort the toys to understand which items may be suitable for donation, which can be safely repaired, and which will be sent for recycling. Through the partnership, Moose Toys aims to not only raise awareness around the issues of waste but educate and activate Australians to try new ways to discard unwanted toys.
At the same time, the scheme will help divert unnecessary materials from landfill or incineration while the team will be able to gather new insights to help form broader opportunities in the toy industry.
The More Joy, Less Waste scheme first got underway last year when the pilot received strong positive response from the Australian public, with over 3,842 toys donated over four weeks, ranging from action figures and baby dolls to plush toys. Of these, more than 98% were either repaired, rehomed, or recycled saving nearly 600kg of materials from becoming unnecessary landfill.
The programme has been launched as part of Moose Toy’s target to become Net Zero by 2040, which includes addressing end of life solutions for toys and extending product lifecycles through sustainable design.
The second iteration of the More Joy, Less Waste scheme will launch at the Altona gate Shopping Centre in Melbourne and will run until March 15th this year.
