Moose Toys praised for going Beyond Best Practice in packaging

The international toy company, Moose Toys has been praised for going Beyond Best Practice by the Australian authority on packaging sustainability for its approach to innovative design and materials use that ‘enriches the local recycling system.’

Moose Toys was awarded a Level 5 ranking by the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation and listed within the Beyond Best Practice in its 2023 Annual Report.

Each year, the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) assesses its members’ packaging sustainability according to indicators including leadership, packaging outcomes, and operations to score them between Level 1 and Level 5. Moose Toys joined the APCO in 2012 and has been reporting its initiatives each year since.

Its ranking in the 2023 report marks the strongest result in the toy company’s history.

Joost Poulus, Moose Toys’ chief product officer, said: “This is an incredibly proud moment for the entire team at Moose. It is a testament to our long-term commitment to sustainability that includes a pledge to be Net Zero across our value chain by 2040.

“While we recognise there is a journey to go on, to receive the recognition for the effort so far will continue to motivate us as we move forward.”

The outcome, the company has stated, is the ‘product of unwavering passion and determination across its global team’. Since joining the APCO in 2012, Moose Toys has trained a particular focus on its packaging, aiming to develop a design process for its packaging that makes it not only recyclable but enriches the local recycling system with high-quality, non-contaminated materials.

Packaging is just one part of a company-wide sustainability strategy to reduce its emissions and environmental impact. Earlier this year, the toy company detailed its latest partnership with the circular economy accelerator platform, Circonomy to trial new end of life practices for well-loved toys.

The campaign encouraged families to deposit old toys they no longer wanted into collection bins. The toys would then be sorted through to understand which items could be donated, safely repaired, or recycled. The initiative was run to avoid all unnecessary materials ending up in landfill.
