Products of Change is continuing its search for answers and insight into the big questions of sustainability in the paper sector with an exclusive presentation next week from the not-for-profit organisation, Two Sides.
Taking place on Tuesday, 16th May at 4.00pm (GMT), the session will hand the mic over to Jonathan Tame, managing director of Two Sides, a membership platform funded by the print and paper packaging industry to promote the sustainability within it.
Two Sides has set upon a mission to ‘educate consumers on the realities of sustainability within print and paper packaging,’ through the launch of key principles, including an anti-greenwash campaign targeting messaging that ‘digital is better for the environment than paper’ while providing the facts around the sustainable management of the paper sector.
Jonathan will explore the organisation’s latest report and trend tracker assessing consumer perceptions of the environmental impact of the paper industry that includes a visible rise in engagement with print and paper products in a post-pandemic world. The report will explain how across Europe, forest growth is increasing by around 1,500 football pitches everyday – forests linked to the paper industry.
“There’s often a misconception that the paper industry is intrinsically linked to the deforestation of the rainforests in South America which isn’t true,” says Josh Birch, marketing executive at Two Sides UK. “That’s predominantly due to agriculture and creating land for cattle grazing. The paper industry actually tends to rely on the off-cuts from wood used for lumber.
“The industry has come a long way and has increasingly tried to improve its own footprint. Replantation schemes means that any trees used for paper is treated as a crop, so it is replanted – there’s a lot of information around the topic of paper and it is our role at Two Sides to try to simplify that and make it easy for customers and businesses to understand.”
Reading habits, perceptions and attitudes towards paper, and a closer look into the latest Two Sides report will all be up for discussion when the team takes the spotlight at the next Paper Workstream session next week. Products of Change members can register for the event here.

“The latest research report from Two Sides, the Trend Tracker Survey 2023, seeks to understand changing consumer perceptions towards print, paper, packaging, and tissue products,” said Josh. “Find out what consumers think regarding our industry and its products and discover the sustainable story that print, paper, and paper-based packaging has to tell.”
