The international toy company, Schleich has lifted the lid on its first ‘sustainability brochure’ – a new publication produced to showcase its history with sustainable development as well as the strategy and commitment taking it into the future.
Launched in celebration of Earth Day this week, the Sustainability Brochure reinforces the company’s commitments to sustainability, including its goal to embed Cradle to Cradle circular economy principles into the design of most of its toys by 2027.
Over the next two and a half years, Schleich will reduce its scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 25%; it will expand its toy take-back initiative to cover more than 60% of its sales markets by the end of 2027; and will ensure that 100% of its packaging is recyclable and at least 35% of any plastic used will come from recycled sources within the same timeframe.
Recognising that 80% of the world’s toys end up in landfill, incinerators, or in the ocean with one million tonnes of toy waste produced each year, the German toy company is looking to change the narrative.
“As a longstanding toy brand, we recognise our responsibility to continue to shape a positive future for our children and, therefore, for our planet,” said Stefan De Loecker, Schleich’s ceo. “Hence, we have developed a sustainability strategy anchored on four core pillars: the toys we create; our impact on the planet; the people who work for our toys; and our commitment to children.
“I am proud to introduce our first sustainability brochure, outlining our journey to integrate sustainable practices into every aspect of our business.”
The report has been meticulously poured over by Schleich’s head of sustainability, Dr Philipp Hummel; head of PR and corporate communication, Kristin Isabel Malbrant who – within it – dive into the intricacies of the Cradle to Cradle initiative to which Schleich will continue to produce its toys.
Dr Philipp, said: “By embracing the Cradle to Cradle criteria, we are not only creating timeless toys but also redefining their lifecycle. Our commitment to sustainable solutions means we are working to find ways to ensure Schleich figurines come full circle and are reincorporated into the product lifecycle at the end of their journey.
“This holistic approach is not just about out toys, it’s also about charting a path to a more responsible and sustainable future for play.”
Since 2019, Schleich has reduced its scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 60%. Across Germany, 100% of its sites are now powered by green electricity.
Rounding out its commitments for 2027, Schleich aims to see 90% of its global suppliers audited for ESG.
