The Wombles joins the Big Help Out with Age UK volunteering partnership

Products of Change member, The Wombles celebrated the King’s Coronation this bank holiday weekend in true Womble fashion, by rolling up sleeves and supporting the Big Help Out campaign with its official charity partner Age UK.

The Big Help Out was introduced in the lead up to the Coronation of King Charles III to encourage Brits to volunteer their time to help local communities and charity organisations as part of the extended weekend celebrations.

Throughout 2023, The Wombles is partnering with Age UK as part of a drive to encourage the British public to ‘use the charity’s high street shops as local recycling centres.’ The initiative aims to prompt people to take old and pre-loved items to the high street stores so as to see them sold on – and remain in the value stream – rather than be thrown away.

The added benefit is that money made will be reinvested into the work Age UK carries out to support the elderly across the country.

“Together, we hope to inspire people to adopt positive behaviour, whether that’s by recycling their unwanted items and donating them to Age UK shops, or by reusing pre-loved items purchases in the Charity’s shops,” said The Wombles’ official spokesperson, Great Uncle Bulgaria in an online post.

The much-loved children’s characters first landed on UK screens in the 1970s. The brand has since come out of hibernation to spread its positive message of local environmentalism. A consumer poll conducted by The Radio Times in 2014 included The Wombles in a list of the top ten most popular BBC TV children’s characters of all time.

The team has been busy making plans for the 50th anniversary of the brand that actively inspires positive social behaviour through its message of recycling and reuse.
