Out and about: in London
Looking for: connections and innovation
We found: that the music industry is rocking it?
Hi all, and welcome to the first ever POC out and about blog, where we will be going into a little more depth of the exciting places we have been and people we have met.
Who am I?
Hi, I’m Ruby Rocksmith, I am POC’s first intern. Officially I am POC’s Curator of Innovation. I am a student at Loughborough University joining the team for my industrial placement year. I am studying geography with a keen interest in sustainability.
This issue is focused on the Light Fund YPN Coffee and Connect at Universal Music Group and the Exiled exihabition, The Root Cause, held at The Mills Fabrica.
Coffee and Connect at UMG
The Young Persons Network (YPN) Coffee and Connect is run by The Light Fund charity. Coffee and Connect helps support young professionals just entering the Brand Licensing industry.
Not only did I have a chance to meet some amazing people from the industry, we also got to listen to Damien Treece (Head of Licensing at UMG UK). Damien spoke about concepts such as cultural connection within music and the importance of connecting listeners with the artist’s universe.
We also listened to a panel with Damien Treece, Morgan Hughes (VP of Label services Bravado UK), Lucie Cash (Content and Rights management at Royal Mail) and, Stewart Tyson (Head of Strategy, IP and Licensing at Royal Mail), discussing topics from stamp eligibility to the democratization of fandom.
The Root Cause by Exiled at the Mills Fabrica
Visiting the Root cause Exhibition by Exiled was inspiring.
The exhibition was centered around taking waste and giving it a new life.
Exiled are based in Hull where a team of 10 textile technicians intercept the textile waste that lands on the yard.
Exiled not only work on upcycling but also chemical fiber to fiber and cotton regeneration.
There was also a display of the project that Exiled had worked with their local prison, taking their waste and upcycling it. Not just this but teaching inmates to be creative and help with employment after release.
Thank you to Helen Marshall for walking us through the exhibition and giving us a background on some of the pieces.
It was interesting to hear about how this kind of work can open your mind to new creative possibilites you wouldn’t have considered previously. A skill that we could all use more of.
The space is beautiful and we are proud to have The Mills Fabrica, a POC member, supporting such important work
Join me and the team for more blogs like this about what exciting things we have been up to behind the scenes.
