Christian Lanckman, LEGO’s sustainable packaging manager has optimised 50% of LEGO’s licensing partners’ packaging, resulting in huge cost savings, as well as improving their sustainability. Now he brings his expertise to the POC Conference on 5 November.

The work Christian Lanckman has done with LEGO has demonstrated the benefits of packaging optimisation, including cost savings and sustainability improvements. Christian explained that he wanted to bring this expertise and support to LEGO’s partners because efficient packaging is one of LEGO’s ambitions and he could provide its partners with cost savings and sustainability improvements.
Packaging optimisation is especially crucial in light of upcoming legislation, such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and the packaging waste regulation adding constraints and costs through taxes.
Through creating the packaging optimisation programme for LEGO, Christian developed a performance prediction algorithm which helps partners have more sustainable packaging by reducing material use while generating large financial savings, lowering EPR taxes and enhancing logistic efficiency. This is largely achieved through material improvement, light weighting, right sizing, cube optimisation, and harmonisation of the packaging portfolio.
Holistic optimisation for large volume articles can have profound impact and generate the highest savings. Christian used the example of a partner who, as a result of packaging optimisation was able to put 44% more product on a pallet, not to mention the savings from reduced packaging material use and EPR taxes.
However, Christian emphasises that the performance specification of packaging must be maintained, with edge scratch tests, right board strength, burst puncture, and compressions of palletisation and the container.
Join us at the Products of Change Conference on 5 November 2025 at the Royal Geographical Society, London, to hear more from Christian about how optimising your product packaging can save you money, as well as reduce your environmental impact.
