Whether due to sustainability incentives or the cost of living crisis, the second-hand fashion market is booming. Delving deeper into this trend and the opportunity it presents for brands, licensees, and retailers, will be Tamara Sender Ceron, from Mintel, at the POC Conference in just two weeks.
Rooting through charity or second-hand clothes shops, or trawling sites such as Vinted, Depop or Ebay, the second-hand fashion market has grown exponentially in recent years. Market intelligence agency, Mintel’s associate director of fashion and retail research, Tamara Sender Ceron, will be joining the POC Conference to reveal the data behind this shift.
From emerging second-hand platforms to high-street take-back schemes, attendees to the POC Conference this year will gain a clear picture of where the market is heading and what it means for brands, licensees, and retailers. The report reveals that 64% of consumers aged 16-34 buy items that resell well. “Retailers and brands need to see resale as an opportunity rather than a threat,” says Tamara.
Tamara’s presentation will highlight key insights from her recently published Fashion & Sustainability – UK – 2025 report, which Tamara explains “reveals a persistent ‘say–do gap’: while many consumers express concern for sustainability, their actual purchasing behaviour often contradicts these values. The rapid rise of Shein, especially among young women, exemplifies this disconnect between attitudes and actions.”
While on the whole, younger generations have a much greater awareness of the climate crisis and subsequent climate anxiety as a result, the impact of the cost of living crisis, social media influencers and ‘haul’ trends, alongside a need for short terms pleasures, has fuelled the ultra fast fashion industry. Tamara will dig into this disconnect and what it means for the fashion market going forward.
“Shifting consumer behaviours are changing how people shop for fashion and what they expect from retailers. I will help retailers/brands understand how to close the say-do-gap when it comes to sustainability and the key opportunities to win over consumers,” says Tamara.
Although, Tamara adds, sustainability is not necessarily a primary factor in consumers’ fashion purchasing decisions, “ongoing financial pressures have encouraged more frugal habits,” and therefore what we would consider to be more sustainable habits are being adopted as they are also more economical. “Consumers are increasingly turning to second-hand shopping, repairing garments, and reselling unused clothing.”
As a market intelligence agency, Mintel is an expert in predicting what is next for consumers, innovation, and global markets. Tamara adds, “With over 50 years of expertise and millions of data points, we fuse the real-world understanding of Mintel’s experts with cutting-edge technology to uncover patterns and predict the future.”
Now Mintel will be bringing its leading market research, and informed expertise to the POC Conference to give attendees an insight into the real behaviours and spending of consumers today.
